Leonard Lee Smart of Green Forest passed away June 22, 2026, at the age of 84. He was born September 17, 1941, in Mountain Grove, MO, to William Leslie Smart and Sylvia Pauline McGowen Smart. He married Margaret Ann Clark, and they built a life together for 56 years. After spending time living in the northwest US, they made their home in Green Forest, AR.

A friend to everyone he met and a man who had no enemies, Leonard left a legacy of love and perseverance for his family and friends to follow. He loved his family dearly, especially spending time with his children and grandchildren. After overcoming a lengthy battle with cancer in the 1990’s, he continued to stay busy with his family and his many hobbies and interests.

Although Leonard enjoyed being at home, he also enjoyed the outdoors, spending time hunting and fishing. Margaret loved to cook what he brought home after a day in the woods or on the lake, and he enjoyed eating what she made! And he enjoyed making jerky with his food dehydrator the kids had purchased for him.

Leonard also loved sports and country music. He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Cardinals fan. In his younger days, he played guitar and sang with and traveled in a family country music band, Sundance Country. He wrote over 20 songs, and even though the songs were never published, they meant so much to him personally.

Leonard will be dearly missed by his family. He is survived by his wife Margaret of the home, 5 daughters, Carla Smart, Sue Smart, Barbara Jene Edwards, Melissa Anne Henry, and Tammie Lynn Griffin, and 1 son, James Robert Smart. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren, and 2 brothers, Dwayne and Ronnie Smart.

He is preceded in death by his parents William and Pauline Smart, and brother Alvin Smart.

Celebration of Life service will be 11 AM, Saturday, July 11, 2026, at New Hope Fellowship in Green Forest with Pastor Matthew Spate officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Home. Online condolences can be made at smithfamilyfuneralhome.net.
