Lucy Smith Obituary

Helen Lucille (Lucy) Smith went to be with Jesus in the afternoon of March 18, 2023, following a heroic 5-month battle of 2 cancers.  She was 83 years old.  She fought the good fight and is in the arms of Jesus.  She longed to be with the love of her life, Robert (Bob) L. Smith.  They were married for 17 years, and they are finally together again in Heaven.

Lucy was born June 5, 1939, and recently told us she couldn’t believe how good God had been to her.  “He gave me my wonderful family.”  Her biggest joy was her children and grandchildren.  She always said her job was to pray for all her kids, grandkids and great grandkids.  If you married into the family, you were automatically another child.  She loved to brag on how many she had.

She worked hard to provide for her family but her biggest joy was to cook for everyone.  Her heart was simple.   Love Jesus.  Love her family.  Love her Church.  She didn’t long for things of this world.   She kept busy gardening, canning, cooking beans and cornbread, chili, and lots of desserts.  She also loved to cook for her wonderful neighbors and church.  She didn’t use recipes, she just “knew” what it needed.

Some of her favorite memories was serving as a youth counselor at church camp.  She loved on those girls and was so proud of them.  Her and Bob prepared many meals for VBS during the summers at New Hope Baptist Church.  She talked non-stop about what her Sunday School Class had meant to her.  The friendships and Bible Study was something she missed dearly these last few months.  She cherished all the visits and calls she received.  New Hope Baptist has been her rock.

Lucy also had a bit of a “bossy” side.  She sure loved giving out instructions to make sure everything got done.  She always had chores in the house, garden, or yard.  Everyone that knew her, expected it.   Sometimes you might get to ignore it, but usually you just did it.  But don’t worry, she would send something homemade with you as a thank you.

One of her favorite encouragements was “You’re a child of the King and you can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”  Philippians 4:13

She is survived by her children: Tony (Denise) Barnes of Omaha, Vesta Barnes of Harrison, Greg Barnes of Omaha, David (Julie) Barnes of Bergman, Judy (David) Brown of Bella Vista.; stepchildren, Lee (Debbie) Smith, Lester (Teresa) Smith, Larry (Debbie) Smith, Lynn (Cheryl) Smith.

Also surviving are 10 Grandchildren and 19 Great Grandchildren
