Sonny Smothers

James “Sonny” Smothers, age 86 of Green Forest, passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2022.  He was born August 14, 1936, in Coin, AR to Fred and Fairy Mae Magness Smothers.

Sonny, as he was known to everyone, worked at Automatic Casting in Green Forest for 20 years. He grew broiler chickens for Tysons, and he was a cattle farmer. He was a master of tinkering with things, and he enjoyed gardening. Most of all he loved spending time with his wife and family, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

Sonny was a veteran of the United States Army.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Linda Potter Smothers of the home and their 3 children, daughter Cheri and her husband Denny Wood of Fayetteville, daughter Sheila and her husband Brian Barnes of Berryville and son Austin Smothers of Green Forest. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, Brock (Mandy) Wood of Fayetteville, Zach (Sara) Wood of Fayetteville, Shelby (Alex) Newkirk of Heber Springs, Lasche (Jerad) Finch of Carr Lane, Vanessa (David) Armer of Green Forest, Keshia (Donnie) Tomlinson of Berryville, Dalton (Erica) Ewing of Osage, Maeghanne (Wayne) Whiteley of Dean and Cordale Smothers of Green Forest, 25 great-grandchildren, and 2 siblings, Freddie Massengale and Joy Molder.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Kenny Smothers and brothers-in-law FM Massengale and Pence Smith.

Visitation for Sonny will be Wednesday, September 21 from 5-7 PM at Smith Family Funeral Home in Green Forest. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Online condolences can be made at smithfamilyfuneralhome.net.
